"But Mrs. Parker, it's Homecoming!!" Oh, good grief! Well, you will be happy to know two things: 1) this is an easy blog and 2) there is NO lit terms test this week!! :-)
Tonight's blog: your canon of literature. Which works are included on your personal list? Why? Please name at least 10 titles and give explanations. (Yes, you are correct; some works do not need explanation!) :-)
Easy... no contest at all.
ReplyDelete1. All works by Edgar Allan Poe. I think this needs no justification.
2. Dracula by Bram Stoker. It's the world-famous, iconic piece of Gothic Horror. Plus, the vampire doesn't sparkle.
3. Anthem by Ayn Rand. We think we are freethinkers, but very few of us actually are. We could all learn a thing or two from this book.
4. On The Road by Jack Kerouac. The way he writes is just so incredibly believable. I read that book and I feel like I'm on the road with them.
5. Harry Potter. JK Rowling managed to write something that has captivated me for almost twelve years. Not only is it a wonderful story, but she managed to work in a whole bunch of meaningful allegory.
6. The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux. It's a great mystery, very romantic and super-suspenseful.
7. Twilight. Not because I like it... But I think everybody should study it as an example of what NOT to do in literature. Everybody loves two-dimensional, superficial characters and painfully ridiculous dialogue, right? And stalking and teen pregnancy are so romantic.
8. I Am America (And So Can You) by Stephen Colbert. Yes, I am being completely serious. Sometimes there is no way to argue with stupid people. Sometimes you just have to agree with them until they realize how ridiculous their ideas really are.
9. His Dark Materials, by Philip Pullman. It's a captivating story with a profound message. Even if you don't agree with it, you can still appreciate it.
10. Feed by MT Anderson. I think that this is the ultimate dystopian novel. It is the closest to what is going on in our society today. It exemplifies our society's anti-intellectual philosophy.
Okay this is so not an easy blog! I can maybe name 5 but I don't really have explinations. I like them cuz they have some sort of importance to me.
ReplyDelete1. The Bible
2. Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers.
3. Wuthering Heights
4. The Chronicles of Narnia
5. Little Women
6. The Outsiders
7. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
8. Huck Finn
Okay that's all I could get and that took a lot of thinking!!
uuuhhhh i dont even remember what I read over the summer.
ReplyDelete1. the bible- because I try to use it to guide me every day
2. three cups of tea- its an inspirational book that shows what a guy is willing to do to help people he doesn't even know
3. the grapes of wrath-it shows the struggles that people were facing, and the fact that although it was 1930's America, no one really helped people (what not to do if you are a human being)
4. the kite runner-it was a really sad to see that people are being so discriminated against and is a good reminder not to judge a book by its cover
(ok so I think literature includes songs and movies too)
5. let it be by the beatles- it gives me relief to say everything is going to be fine, let it go
6. Shutter Island-best movie ever! the way that everyhing was so intricately designed to play out, and you could interpret the end how you wanted
7. The Lovely Bones (book)- it made me think about my family and how much I would really miss them if I were gone, and to be thankful for them
8. where the sidewalk ends :)- it makes me feel like a kid again
9. brave new world- it gave a disturbing, but interesting view of a dystopian society ( I liked the sciencey stuff in it)
10. The Sound and the Fury- it was really complicated, but I like the fact that it told thew story from a lot of character's views, and in their unique voices
THE END.

Mother Parker’s Personal Literary Canon
ReplyDelete1. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn – The Great American Novel
2. The Scarlet Letter – Those of you who mentioned it, thanks. I say, READ it before you tell me it’s no good. Because it is good.
3. A Tale of Two Cities – You've read it, so ou know why it's on here.
4. Gone with the Wind – OK, so perhaps not as literary, but we are not being lit snobs in this list. This is THE book for me – the one that changed how I felt about books forever.
5. Hamlet – You gotta have Shakespeare, so you gotta have Hamlet.
6. Our Town – I love this play. A simplistic look at life, death, love … a glimpse of Americana … I can’t watch it without crying.
7. The Importance of Being Earnest – I like to laugh, so I had to include a comedy. This one is funny! You're going to like it.
8. The works of Flannery O’Connor. We’ll read some of them … I’ll hold my thoughts until we get there.
9. The works of Edgar Allan Poe. Did I ever tell you I can recite The Raven? ;-)
10. The Outsiders – A shout out to juvenile fiction because without this book, many students would have NEVER finished a “real” novel!
This whole idea of movies on your literary canons ... oooooooohhhhhh ... I'm not handling this very well! We may need to have lit terms after all ...
Emily- I have all the Heartland books! They were my absoulte favorite books to read growing up and I forgot all about them until I read your post.
ReplyDeleteSo to finish off my list, I would like to add...
9. The Heartland Series
10. Any of Lurlene McDaniel books. They are all very sad and depressing but taught me a lot and it's probably one of the reasons I want to be a PA.
Cinda- yes! Just let me know when you want it! : )
I'm tuning into this post fashionably late...
ReplyDelete1. The Bible as it is the most influential book in Western Civilization
2. A Tale of Two Cities because it is the best written book I have ever read
3. For Whom the Bell Tolls because it simultaeneously justifies cruelty and love during war
4. Lord of the Flies because it is just an extremely easy and pleasurable read
5. 1984 because not many books have chilled me as this book has'
6.Moby Dick-call me ishmael because there is no replicating the feeling of accomplishment when you finish the last page
7.Harry Potter because it got me into reading from the beginning
8. Life of Pi because it is a well written book that creatively resembles no other book I have ever read
9. Stephen King novels because they are easy and horrifying
10. 10,000 Leagues under the Sea because it is a pleaurable book that I have read several times
I noticed that the Bible and Harry Potter are mentioned quite frequently. So far, Harry Potter is second only to the Bible on the list of the biggest best-sellers of all time. Theoretically, if every person on earth went out and bought a copy of Harry Potter right now, then HP would break the Bible's record.
ReplyDeleteI suggest a conspiracy!!!!
But not everybody is going to go out and buy a copy of HP and if every person on earth went out and bought any book then it would obviously be a top seller. No conspiracy, the Bible is an awesome book and has helped me through a LOT that no one needs to go through and I can honestly say that if it hadn't been for me reading the Bible, I would not be where I am or who I am today. This is why it is above HP on the best sellers list.
ReplyDeleteWell MP, no new blog up, so my comment for this reading in Norton's is that I totally remember each of the stories, and it was interesting to go back and re-read, already having the knowledge about the story. I definitely got more out of the stories this time than last time I read them.
ReplyDelete
